handling an unhappy client

Oct 21, 2025

No matter how talented you are, there will be times when a client isn’t completely happy with the final result—it happens for many reasons. While it can feel frustrating or even disheartening, there are ways to handle it with professionalism and grace.

First, truly listen to your client’s wants, needs, and vision. Ask for photo references and find out exactly what they like in those images. Often, clients struggle to articulate what they want, so ask clarifying questions and share your professional perspective.

Be patient when explaining things. What feels like common sense to you may be brand-new to them—that’s why they hired you. You can usually tell when someone isn’t thrilled just by the way they look in the mirror. Reassure them that adjustments are possible and invite their feedback. Sometimes it’s something small—lashes, lip color, or skin finish—that needs tweaking.

During consultations, I like to ask about their everyday makeup routine, any products or steps they dislike, and if there’s anything they prefer to do themselves (like brows, mascara, or lips). This helps me understand their vibe and ensures they feel like the best version of themselves—enhanced, not unrecognizable.

Keep working with them until you see that genuine, confident smile. And remember: don’t take it personally. Every client experience is an opportunity to grow into a stronger, more intuitive artist.

Wellness tip:

After a long day of standing, lay down on your back and elevate your legs straight on the wall. This promotes blood flow, circulation, reduces fluid in the legs and tbh feels fcking amazing.
