clients & collabs: when payment isn't just money

Oct 21, 2025

As artists, we all want to be paid fairly for our services, but sometimes payment comes in a different form than money. There will be moments when a client offers something like exposure, editorial credit, or even product trade in place of a traditional rate. In these situations, I think it’s really important to pause and weigh your options. Ask yourself: Will this help me grow my clientele? Could it expand my social media following? Is it a cool opportunity that might help me grow as an artist? If the answer feels like yes, it may be worth taking on.

At the same time, it’s equally important to recognize when a free job isn’t worth it. If you’re already stretched too thin or if the opportunity doesn’t add value to your growth, then donating your time may end up costing you more than it gives back. And speaking of cost—if you do agree to a free collaboration, I always recommend asking for at least a travel fee. For example, I often Uber to my clients, and even if I’m not being paid for my artistry, I want my transportation covered so that I’m not losing money in the process. Remember: you’re already doing them a favor by working at no cost.

Sometimes it’s not about working for free, but rather a client asking for a discount. In these cases, you can choose to meet them in the middle if it feels comfortable and worthwhile, or you can politely decline if it doesn’t align with your worth. If it’s a client you’re genuinely excited about working with and you believe the relationship will benefit your career, then a compromise might make sense. But never forget: this is your career, your livelihood, and your income. Only you can decide what feels right, and there’s no wrong answer—as long as it’s in your best interest.

Trust yourself—you know your worth, and every choice you make is shaping the career you’re building.
